Question: "Do Vets make house calls?"

Answer: This turned out to be a very complex answer.  First I did a standard search for Vets who make house calls in NYC.  At this point I thought of three main reasons you may need a Vet to make a house call.

bullet

You have no way to transport your pet to the Vet for a regular checkup.

bullet

Your pet is very sick and you have no way to transport your pet to the Vet.

bullet

Your pet is so sick they made need to be euthanized and again you have no way to transport your pet to the Vet.

So lets start with the easy stuff first, how to you find a Vet in our neighborhood of NYC:

http://www.thecityofnewyorkcity.com/veterinarian/

http://ny.urbanhound.com/houndServices/searchResults.asp?regions=0&service=6

http://www.downtownpet.com/nyc_vets_animal_emergency.html

So now you either you already have a Vet or your have found a Vet in your local area.  Next, how do I find one who makes house calls:

First, consult your personal veterinarian, who may perform this service on a case-by-case basis if it isn’t part of their regular practice. Or, they may be able to make a referral.  Procedure:

Call local veterinary organizations for referrals.

bullet

Contact the American Association of House call Veterinarians. Because their practice is devoted to house calls, at-home euthanasia is among their services. For more information, including their Vet Locator service, visit their web site at http://www.housecallvets.org.

bullet

Contact the American Animal Hospital Association for referrals to AAHA-accredited hospitals. The AAHA adopted new hospital accreditation standards for house call and mobile practices, and referrals to AAHA-accredited housecall/mobile practices will be forthcoming. For additional information, click on http://www.healthypet.com or call 800-883-6301.

bullet

Refer to the “Veterinarian” listing in your local yellow pages and see if at-home is among the specified services. Or go on-line to
http://www.yellowpages.com.

The Vets I found who advertise on the Internet they will make house calls:

Brooklyn:

http://www.drpatspethousecalls.com/services

Manhattan:

http://www.citypetsvets.com

http://www.myvetonline.com/website/athomevet

http://www.villageveterinarian.com

http://www.vet-housecalls.com

http://www.housecallsforyourpet.com

Staten Island:

I found a service very useful in Staten Island that I'm sure many pet owners look for, a pet sitting service.  That's right this is a service you can use when you go on vacation and you don't want to send your pet off to a strange place.  It's called Soft Paws Pet Service & Boutique, see website below:

http://www.softpawspet.com

Now comes the most difficult part of the question to answer, what if I need to have my pet put to sleep and I cannot transport them to a Vet.  Most of the Vets who make house calls will help you in this time of need.

However, you should be aware that the loss of a pet will impact you in a very extreme way and you should seek first and foremost your family and or friends for help and support.  If you need additional help and most often you will know if you may need more help.  Following is a start:

The Association for Pet Loss & Bereavement, Inc., P.O. Box 106, Brooklyn,
NY 11230, 718-382-0690 -
http://www.aplb.org

Also go to http://www.pet-loss.net they have a listing of help centers by state.  Download Free Brochure "Ten Tips On Coping With The Loss Of Your Pet" courtesy of pet-loss.net.
